Dear Members and Friends...
I am pleased to share the August edition of ICHCA Insights. This month brings together a wide range of developments across our community, from new safety guidance and industry research to the opening of the TT Club Innovation in Safety Awards.
The awards will open for entries on 31 August 2026, and we encourage organisations, innovators and safety leaders to begin preparing their submissions. These awards celebrate practical, impactful initiatives that help ensure that everyone goes home safe, and we look forward to showcasing the very best examples of innovation across the cargo handling and logistics sectors.
This edition also highlights ICHCA’s contribution to the latest Port Technology International Journal, Ports Under Pressure. Our article examines more than 25 years of cargo handling, drawing on over 1,100 incidents and almost 1,700 casualties worldwide. The analysis explores recurring fatal risk categories, common operational activities associated with severe incidents and the importance of leadership, critical controls and continuous learning.
In addition, we share updated guidance on the safe carriage of nickel ore cargoes, published by the International Group of P&I Clubs in collaboration with INTERCARGO and Roxburgh. The publication draws attention to the continuing risks associated with shipments from in the south-western Pacific Ocean and provides practical recommendations to help mitigate those risks.
You will also find details of a new educational video series released by the Australian Government, focusing on minimising pest contamination in global sea container movements.
Finally, we provide an update on upcoming IMO meeting dates and current hot topics shaping the wider regulatory landscape. Staying informed on these developments supports our shared commitment to safer, more efficient and more sustainable cargo operations worldwide.
Thank you for your continued engagement and support.
Let’s keep raising standards, together.

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has released a valuable new series of educational videos addressing pest contamination risks associated with the international movement of sea containers.
The five-video series has been developed to support industry stakeholders in understanding how pests can move through containerised supply chains and what practical actions can be taken to reduce those risks. According to the Department, sea containers play a critical role in global trade but can also contribute to the spread of pests and diseases that threaten agriculture, biodiversity, food security and international commerce.
