December 2025

Dear Members and Friends...

As we come to the final month of the year, December offers a natural moment to take stock—not only of the challenges our industry continues to face, but also of the steady, practical progress being made across the global cargo-handling community. This issue brings together several reminders of why shared learning and collective vigilance matter, especially as operations remain busy through the winter period.

We begin with a look ahead to one of the highlights of early 2026: the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award Ceremony taking place in London on 25 February. It promises to be a valuable opportunity to celebrate forward-thinking safety solutions and reconnect with colleagues committed to reducing harm across the supply chain.

This edition also highlights the World Shipping Council’s recent report to the IMO, revealing an 11.39% deficiency rate across nearly 78,000 container inspections. The findings reinforce the continuing need for correct declarations, careful packing and close attention to dangerous goods compliance—areas where our members play a vital role in preventing incidents.

You’ll also find the latest safety bulletin from G2 Ocean, focusing on danger zones and the risks posed by moving and falling cargo. It’s a timely reminder that, even with experienced teams and established procedures, maintaining safe distances and situational awareness remains critical.

Finally, we share seasonal greetings from the ICHCA team, along with updates on our IMO work and access to the October Current Awareness Bulletin, helping members stay informed on regulatory developments as we move into the new year.

Let’s keep raising standards, together.

2. WSC report reveals 11.39% deficiency rate found by government cargo inspection programmes

The World Shipping Council submitted a comprehensive report to the IMO’s CCC11 sub-committee, consolidating container inspection data from seven countries during 2024.

It identifies deficiencies related to dangerous goods or marine pollutants in packaged form on board ships or in port areas. 11.39% of the 77,688 containers inspected showed deficiencies including mis-declared and undeclared dangerous goods, incorrect documentation, and improper packing – all of which can lead to serious safety incidents.

A seasoned stevedore foreman once said that “the only soft objects in a port are the humans”.

5. The work of the IMO and the latest Current Awareness Bulletin

ICHCA is proud to be a recognised Non-Governmental Organisation at the International Maritime Organisation. It means that the cargo handling industry has a voice when amendments to international regulations and codes of practice are being made.

The next meeting for maritime safety concerns is the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) which starts on 19 January 2026. ICHCA members can attend in person or virtually, to observe the processes and contribute to our work at IMO on industry’s behalf. For more information, contact secretariat@ichca.com.
