1. A wealth of safety innovation in one place
Safety innovators in the field of cargo handling from across the globe have been celebrated via the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award. Their outstanding entries were submitted late last year and have now been collated in their entirety by the awards organizer ICHCA International. The resultant Digest is now available.
The well-being of the workforce and the security of cargo and equipment are at the forefront of cargo handling operations throughout the world. This is reassuring, however more can always be done to improve safety conditions. TT Club, together with ICHCA are therefore maintaining their efforts to encourage and disseminate the good news about successful innovation wherever possible.
“The publication of this Digest, detailing all twenty-seven innovations put forward for the award this year endeavours to do just that,” says Mike Yarwood, TT’s Managing Director, Loss Prevention. “It demonstrates the strength and quality of the innovations and reflects the drive by organisations throughout the industry to improve safety standards. It is relatively easy, given the spotlight afforded the winners of the award, to appreciate their successes in meeting current safety challenges. However, the high calibre and sheer volume of safety products, processes and concepts offered was so impressive that they all deserve recognition. The Digest fulfils that requirement.”

2. Safety Alert: Fatality of three stevedores in enclosed space on board a bulk vessel
27 June 2022 three stevedores died in a cargo hold access space on board a bulk vessel at Bunyu Island anchorage, Indonesia.
The vessel was loading coal from barges using a floating crane. Loading had been paused and all hatches were closed due to heavy rain. After the rain stopped, a stevedore attempted to access a bulldozer in cargo hold No.7 but mistakenly entered the access space of cargo hold No.8 and was overcome. Two other stevedores collapsed while attempting to rescue him as crew collected rescue equipment.
