Dear Subscriber...
Welcome to the September edition of ICHCA Insights.
It's full speed ahead in September, we are working on updating the CTU Code with the UNECE, IMO, ILO and industry partners. Next week is the IMO Carriage of Cargoes and Containers annual meeting where topics including dangerous goods, confined spaces and safe transport of vehicles will be on the agenda. We launched this year's TT Club Innovation in Safety Award which goes from strength to strength and now forms part of an annual cycle of award entries, February award ceremony and June Safety Village. The award cycle is integral to one of our principal values that the future of safety is not beyond the horizon and we can continue to change the ways we work for the better. We encourage safety innovators from all parts of our industry to enter the award and help everyone to continue learning.
The ICHCA Severe Risk Dashboard is a new tool for ICHCA members that helps to understand serious accidents of the past so that industry can robustly manage the most severe risks in the cargo handling chain. We are happy to talk to members about the findings and explore new ways of slicing the data based on members' interests.
ICHCA is a member of the Cargo Integrity Group (CIG) which campaigns on cargo safety. We were keen to add our voice to the latest message from CIG emphasising the critical need for enhanced safety measures and vigilance in the transport of dangerous goods by sea.
Thanks to member G2 Ocean for their Safety Bulletin which highlights a near miss where a stevedore started operating a crane, while crew were doing repair jobs on the same crane. This demonstrates the importance of communication, cooperation and coordination between ship and shore.
Finally if you haven't already placed a big red mark in your diary please save the date 19 May 2025 for the ICHCA IN-Person Technical Panel & AGM in Barcelona. We are looking forward to seeing you there!
Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

1. TT Club Innovation in Safety Award - Open for Entries
The Award is for those who are making a significant difference to safety in cargo transport – NOW.
As of 2nd September, entries are welcomed for the latest annual TT Club sponsored and ICHCA organized Innovation in Safety Award.
Now more than ever the challenge to everyone in the global freight industry is to drive safety forward. Developing technologies combined with knowledge and experience at all levels can significantly enhance how we manage very real risks to our people cargoes and services. Risks such as explosion, fire, fall, crush, run over and moving objects require ongoing control in ports and onboard ships. The better industry gets at this, the better the results for life, limb, cargo and infrastructure, the better the work for workforces and the more sustainable and successful the organisations that we depend on.

2. ICHCA Severe Risks Dashboard
ICHCA has conducted potentially uniquely wide-ranging research on historic worldwide cargo related workplace fatalities covering the period 2000 to the present day.
We aim to learn from what has happened in the past to better understand the most severe outcome risks in our industry; helping leaders at all levels to continuously improve how they do safety.
By demonstrating the severity potential of these hazards we believe that organisations can:
- re-test existing management controls for focus, completeness and robustness
- re-affirm that work as imagined in procedures designed to address these essential risks actually translates into work as done on the ground
- engage with workforces and other stakeholders to seek well-managed, cooperative change and innovation
The dataset covers over 500 fatalities involving port workers, contractors, visitors and other third parties from 2000 to July 2024.

3. Cargo Integrity Group Applauds Recent MSA Circular, Emphasizes Ongoing Commitment to Supply Chain Safety
The industry bodies of the Cargo Integrity Group, of which ICHCA is a founding member, continue in their mission to improve safety in the global supply chain. The Group has identified a number of cargoes, commonly carried in containers, that under certain conditions can cause dangerous incidents.
The Cargo Integrity Group (CIG) commends the recent circular issued by the China Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) following the explosion incident involving the vessel “YM Mobility” on August 9, 2024, at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. This incident, along with other recent fires aboard container vessels, underscores the critical need for enhanced safety measures and vigilance in the transport of dangerous goods by sea.
