March 2024

Dear Subscriber...

Welcome to the March edition of ICHCA Insights. It has been an action packed few weeks since the last newsletter. We were thrilled to announce the shortlisted and winner entries to the Innovation in Safety Award at the end of February. Every one of the entrants deserves wholehearted recognition for their passion to do the right things right. Each one has a vision, has refused to accept that where we were yesterday was the best that it could ever get and – the really hard part – has done something about it. That is an extraordinarily powerful thing and is wholly worth celebrating. Congratulations to the winners Cross Currents 88 and G2 Ocean. See all of the entries in the ICHCA Digest.

We were privileged to have two splendid guest speakers at our Cargo Safety Coffee Break Webinar this week. Yucel Yildiz and Adrian Scales both delivered important learning on vessel safety and those who were unable to attend in person can see the presentations and Q&A session in the video linked below.

We are excited to announce that ICHCA will once again join partners TT Club and TOC at the TOC Europe Safety Village 11-13 June. This is a valuable opportunity to meet and share ideas and ambition for safety in our industry. We are looking forward to seeing members and partners over the three-day event.

Finally this month we have a safety alert on work at height risk and the UNCTAD Transport and Trade newsletter.

Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

1. Safety Innovators Acclaimed at Annual Award Ceremony

From a shortlist of three chosen by judges from a total of twenty-eight outstanding entries for this year’s competition, the partnership between Cross Currents 88 and G2 Ocean AS was announced as the winner of the TT Innovation in Safety Award, at a presentation ceremony in London. The two highly commended innovations came from Royal Haskoning DHV and Trendsetter Vulcan Offshore.

Independently organised by ICHCA, the TT Club Innovation in Safety Awards are dedicated to both organisations’ mission to promote and improve safety in all operational aspects of the supply chain. In encouraging innovation, the Awards are aimed at showcasing products, processes and services that address safety issues, to as wide an audience as possible, in an increasingly complex and challenging industry.

ICHCA has once again teamed up with TT Club and TOC Worldwide to bring you the Safety Village at TOC Europe on 11-13 June 2024. If you are a safety innovator in the cargo handling industry, this is your opportunity to showcase your supply chain safety solution!

ICHCA will again be at the Safety Village exploring and spotlighting opportunities for safety innovation in our industry with a programme of speakers and the chance to share ideas and learning. We will provide more information as the programme shakes down and we would be delighted to meet with members and other safety innovators in person at the Safety Village. If you are planning to attend TOC Europe as a visitor or exhibitor please get in touch about speaking or just saying hello by emailing secretariat@ichca.com .

4. Safety Alert: Inappropriate use of lift trucks as work at height platforms

Two examples are included in this report of fall from height injuries that occurred on separate vessels. In each case personnel were being lifted by forklift truck – in a metal ‘basket’ and ‘wooden box’ respectively – to undertake work at height. Neither arrangement was suitable or fit for purpose.

In the principal incident, a risk assessment had been undertaken for the work equipment, a high-pressure washer. Use of a ladder had been rejected for safety when using the pressure washer. This suggests a possibly incomplete understanding of risk assessment and management as a means of controlling the safety of the whole work activity.
