Dear Subscriber...

We are delighted to announce that the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award will be open for entries on 2 September 2024. Entrants are required to show that a product, idea, solution, process, scheme or other innovation has resulted in a demonstrable improvement in safety. For those innovators keen to get started early, you can download the pack and application form right now and be ready to send your entry in September!

We have been an active participant in the Cargo Integrity Group for several years, working with our industry partners to help improve cargo transport safety. Based on an ICHCA submission to the IMO, we are campaigning to draw attention to cargoes that may not always have an obvious risk but which if not properly packed, declared and handled can harm people or the environment. We aim to develop additional materials on these cargoes in the coming year.

ICHCA member G2 Oceans latest safety bulletin ‘behind the door’ reports on an incident where bulk cargo poured into a stairwell when the hold access door was opened, emphasising the dynamic nature of risk during cargo operations and how what was safe can become hazardous as conditions change.

A tragic vessel fire that cost the lives of two fire fighters showed how the environment on board vessels can become confusing to those not used to the cargo handling world. In direct response to this incident the Ports of the Delaware River Marine Trade Association developed a first responder vessel familiarisation programme. A video presenting key aspects of that programme is available on our website. We encourage all ports and terminals to proactively consider how they will engage effectively with emergency services in the event of an incident.

And finally the 2024 ICHCA Annual General Meeting will take place on 20 June 2024 in-person in London and virtually online. This will be a formal opportunity for members to have their say and we look forward to welcoming all members on the day. If you would like to attend in-person please contact secretariat@ichca.com for the details.

Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

2. Cargo Handling Industry comes together to demonstrate vital safety innovations

The presentation of the TT Innovation in Safety Award earlier in the year gave industry professionals from across the full spectrum of the cargo handling sector an opportunity to add their voices to the call for continuous safety improvements, and to sharing experiences of innovative advancements in the cause.

Not only were the successful innovators of the award’s short-listed entries on hand to present but representatives from several of the twenty-eight companies that entered were present. A lively discussion forum accompanied the presentation ceremony.

3. Cargo Integrity Group highlights cargoes that can compromise supply chain safety

The industry bodies of the Cargo Integrity Group continue in their mission to improve safety in the global supply chain. The Group has identified a number of cargoes, commonly carried in containers, that under certain conditions can cause dangerous incidents.

They urge everyone handling these goods to follow all applicable regulations, the CTU Code and industry best practices.
In addition to promoting sound packing and shipping practices, the Cargo Integrity Group aims to increase awareness about the types of goods, often less obvious, that can compromise safety in the container supply chain under certain conditions.

5. Safety Alert: Shipboard firefighting by shore based firefighters

On 5 July 2023, a fire caught hold on board the vehicle carrier Grande Costa D’Avorio whilst it was being loaded with cars and other vehicles at a US port. The fire was officially extinguished on 11 July 2023.

Tragically, two shore based firefighters lost their lives whilst courageously trying to fight the fire. The firefighters may have had difficulty in finding their way around the vessel decks in the hazardous and extremely challenging conditions that they encountered. The US Coast guard investigation “…indicated that the local fire department responding to the incident had little to no maritime firefighting training, experience, or familiarization with cargo ships of any type.”
