Dear Subscriber...

Welcome to the February edition of ICHCA Insights.

This month we are excited to confirm our two key speakers for the next ICHCA Cargo Safety Coffee Break Webinar. Don't miss this opportunity to join us on 12 March 2024 to learn about a major maritime battery fire incident and an innovative approach to providing operational risk foresight through interactive data. Follow the link below to register.

The time is fast approaching when our industry will learn who will carry away the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award trophy. Join us in person on 22 February 2024 in London and find out who will be crowned the winner!

We are thrilled to have announced our latest international member RightShip whose mission to make seas safer and minimise the environmental impact of international shipping exactly aligns with our mission to achieve zero harm in ports and terminals by providing a focal point for informing, educating, lobbying, and networking to improve cargo handling knowledge and best practice.

By sharing information about accidents in the industry we aim to help ensure that lessons are learnt once and stayed learned. The safety alerts in this edition both feature risks that can be fatal if not correctly managed: workplace transport and struck by cargo/object. These two risks are in the top four most frequent causes of severe consequence injuries in our industry, and it is vital that we keep awareness of them high and focus action on eliminating them wherever we can.

And finally, the most recent edition of the IMO Current Awareness Bulletin is now available and can be downloaded from the article below.

Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

4. Safety Alert: RoRo Operations - Serious Injury to Signaller

A vessel was loading semi-trailers on Deck 3. The first semi-trailer came up the ramp from Deck 2, made a 180° turn on Deck 3, and lined up into the first lane to starboard, in reverse.

A signaller was standing near the back of the semi-trailer. Another crew member was stationed on the side of the semi-trailer, ready to start securing, once it was in place. The signaller gave a long signal on a whistle, the signal to the driver to stop. But the semi-trailer kept reversing. Consequently, the signaller was caught between the sem-trailer’s side and one of the vessel’s transverse frames.

5. Safety Alert: Fatal Accident During Lifting Operations

In 2022 a RoRo vessel was in port for loading and unloading operations. Local stevedores and crew members were moving steel support beams that were part of the ship’s gear. During this work, a stevedore foreman was hit by sliding support beams and knocked over an edge to a lower deck. The beams fell on top of him.

he large shore crane normally used for the operation had been broken for several months and could not be used. A smaller shore crane was used, but this meant that the crane operator had limited lines of sight and could not see the guide cells on the deck into which containers were to be loaded. To improve crane operator lines of sight it was decided to move a stack of support beams that were stored on the aft deck on top of the housing of the ventilators. They were part of the ship’s gear and were occasionally used to transport 20ft containers.
