Welcome to this month's ICHCA Insights, we are thrilled to have launched this years TT Club Innovation in Safety Award which is now part of a year round programme promoting leading edge safety innovation. If you have an idea that has delivered health and safety improvements that others could also benefit from please do submit an application to the award. Our now well established annual programme will see the award ceremony in February 2024 and the Safety Village at TOC Europe in June 2024.

Please make sure that you put 22 November 2023 into your diary for the ICHCA AGM and Technical Panel virtual meeting. Thought provoking presentations and important learning will be on the agenda. We are grateful this month to InterCargo for their analysis and report on bulk carrier casualties, this important report makes essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the risks associated with bulk sea transport and handling. Finally we are delighted to include the August edition of Inside ICHCA Australia.

1. TT Club Innovation in Safety Award 2023 Opens for Entries

Following the recent success of this annual Award, the 2023 award will continue to form the centrepiece of TT Club and ICHCA’s on-going efforts to encourage players in the freight transport and cargo handling sectors further in continuing to improve operational safety and efficiency through innovation.

ICHCA launched the 2023 TT Club Innovation in Safety Award on 4 September inviting entrants to submit details of their innovations by 13 November 2023. The Award, which is open to an individual, team or company involved in cargo logistics, has seen the prestige associated with winning or being highly commended, grow year-on-year.

2. Save The Date: ICHCA AGM & Technical Panel Meeting

For your diaries, the ICHCA AGM and Technical Panel Meeting will be held virtually on 22 November 2023 between 14:00 and 16:30.

3. ICHCA Radar: InterCargo Bulk Carrier Casualty Report 2013-2022

This Intercargo report notes a reducing trend in bulk cargo vessel losses over 10 years, against an increase in bulk fleet numbers from 10,000 to 13,000 in the period. However it also notes that vessel losses still occur and it is vital to learn from and continuously improve safety performance.

2013-2022 saw 26 bulk carriers over 10,000 dwt reported lost, critically at a cost of 104 seafarer lives. Grounding was the single greatest cause of carrier loss (46%), but with no loss of life. Liquefaction was the greatest cause of fatality with 70 seafarers lost (63.7% of the total).
