Dear Subscriber...

Welcome to the February 2023 ICHCA Insights Newsletter.

February is Award Month when we see the short-listed entries and the winner of the TT Club Innovation in Safety Award. Whilst there can be only one winner, it is clear to me that everyone who has entered and everyone who has read about or seen one or more of the entries is also a winner. All of the entrants have done something unique and have succeeded in developing their idea or approach beyond the ‘drawing board’. Anyone who has looked at the entries can see that it is quite possible to take a step back, look at what we do across the industry and ask if we have an opportunity to make something work better. Even if none of the entries directly open up such opportunities in your organisation, perhaps they can spark your own innovative thoughts about the ‘art of the possible’. Special thanks to the TT Club for again sponsoring the Award and I look forward to seeing many of you at the freshly restored in-person ceremony on 23 February.

Ideas, networking and learning are also central to our new partnership with Transport Events and it is exciting to be able to offer members free places at these prestigious industry conferences throughout this year. The next two conferences are the BIMP-EAGA Maritime in Jakarta and Mediterranean Ports and Shipping in Greece, see below for more information.

Once again, we are happy to share the ICHCA Australia newsletter with members, this publication always gets a noticeable interest from our readers and you can find the link below.

It is always a brilliant to welcome a new member to ICHCA international. Husky Terminal and Stevedoring, LLC provides stevedoring services, container yard and railhead transfer operations; its international ocean transportation terminal, services ocean carriers of Tacoma in the USA. So its work is right at the heart of cargo operations and is a strong fit with our mission. It is a pleasure to have Husky on board.

Finally, it is vital that we learn hard won safety lessons and make sure that they stay learned. Thanks to Port of Tyne and PSS for sharing information on a recent pilot ladder incident. These safety alerts are an essential part of trying to prevent reoccurrence. We will always share knowledge that can benefit the safety of others. If readers know of quality disclosable information about incidents please do not hesitate to send it through.

Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

5. Safety Alert: Non-Injurious Incident During Pilot Disembarkation

ICHCA International is committed to helping industry to learn lessons fast, learn them once and make sure that they stay learnt. This information is intended to provide all organisations in the cargo supply chain with the opportunity to consider the events and to review and adapt their own health and safety control measures to proactively prevent future incidents.

This alert, kindly provided by the Port of Tyne and PSS, addresses the initial findings of an incident where pilot ladder securing on a vessel failed. Luckily, nobody was injured in this instance but it spotlights the vital importance of effectively managing the risks associated with pilot transfer.

The vessel’s crew had made fast the pilot ladder and lowered the access gangway. However it was not possible to secure the gangway to the vessel’s side and the crew moved the pilot ladder further aft to ensure space and sufficient available securing points for the gangway.

Both ladder and gangway were then secured to the vessels side. During the pilot’s disembarkation approximately halfway down the ladder, the lashings securing the ladder to the vessels side parted and it came away. The pilot successfully made it to the bottom assisted by the pilot vessel deckhand and was uninjured.
