The Voice of Cargo Handling

Dear Subscriber...

Welcome to the April 2023 ICHCA Insights Newsletter.

We are always looking for more ways to get the vast wealth of earned industry learning and to everyone who might be exposed to risk or have a role in managing it. This means leveraging the capabilities and networks of partner organisations to extend everyone’s reach and ensure together that everyone gets to work in a sustainable industry where they go home safe. That is why I am especially excited about the potential of our new partnership with the Cargo Incident Notification System, Confidential Human Factors Incident Reporting Programme, Container Owners Association and the Ship Message Design Group. This is a unique opportunity to coordinate data, research and best practices across the broad spectrum of international cargo movement; to create better awareness of practical and effective measures to improve safety throughout industry, operators, regulators and policy makers. We strive to be data driven in our work and the possibility exists to share and improve our knowledge of where the most important risks sit and how to manage them ever more effectively. The first joint publication with these partners has already been released, addressing the very present debate around the safety of Lithium Ion batteries with a focussed paper on transport in containers. There is more to follow, so watch this space! Maintaining the theme of looking to the future, in this issue we are thrilled to announce the ICHCA, TT Club Safety Village at TOC Europe in Rotterdam 13-15 June 2023. It is back and bigger than before! The Safety Village carries through our now year round Innovation in Safety programme and I look forward to seeing people from all over the industry where we can share ‘futurist’ ideas and ambitions. This edition of Insights closes out with the latest ICHCA Australia newsletter covering upcoming events, scolarships, a New Zealand initiative on safety improvement, industry developments and an update from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry amongst many topics.

Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

1. ICHCA Joins Other Industry Groups to Agree Common Action on Crucial Safety Issues

The coming together of five organisations with shared visions for the safety and security of global trade will take advantage of unified information and data sources to bring greater awareness and understanding of issues with the goal of producing preventative output.

The participants have a commonality of purpose to create a framework for cooperation that enables each group to benefit from each other’s activities in respect of their strategies in areas of joint interest. These will, in the immediate future concentrate on improved safety during the global transport and handling of goods that have the potential to cause injury to the workforce and/or damage to the environment and the goods themselves.

3. ICHCA and Partner Industry Bodies Unite in Producing Guidelines for Safe Transport of Lithium-Ion Batteries in Containers

First in a series of in-depth advisory publications aimed at minimising the risks of transporting lithium-ion batteries and cells launched amid heightened concern over container fires.

The Lithium-ion Batteries in Containers Guidelines seek to prevent the increasing risks that the transport of lithium-ion batteries by sea creates, providing suggestions for identifying such risks and thereby helping to ensure a safer supply chain in the future. Together with its partners, the Cargo Incident Notification System Network (CINS) has compiled a comprehensive publication covering the properties of these batteries and their potential to explode, initiate fires and emit toxic gases.
