JULY 2022

The Voice of Cargo Handling

MSC Vessel

Dear Subscriber...

Welcome to the July 2022 ICHCA Insights Newsletter.

We are thrilled to formally welcome the Mediterranean Shipping Company, the world’s largest container shipping line as our new ICHCA member. Reflecting his commitment and passion for safety we are also delighted to report that Dirk Van de Velde MSC’s Chief EHSQ Officer has joined the ICHA Board. We look forward to working with and learning from Dirk to deliver the ICHCA mission. This month ICHCA was accepted onto the international Industry Advisory Group for Container Cleanliness; giving us a brilliant opportunity alongside friend and partner organisations to champion safe, practical and sustainable management of contaminating pests. Speaking of partner organisations, credit to LEEA for their leadership and delivery of Global Lifting Awareness Day. Congratulations for all that was achieved. We also spotlight in this issue the “Current Awareness Bulletin” – for IMO themes and news and are pleased to share the latest edition with ICHCA members. Finally, regular readers will remember that we issued our updated guide to the IMDG Code 40-20 Amendment in March. The 40-20 amendment exited its transition period and became mandatory on 1 June.

Let’s keep raising safety standards together!

The global association representing cargo handling companies, ICHCA International (ICHCA) is delighted to welcome Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping line as a new member with representation on its Board of Directors

As a leading voice in a crucial sector of the global supply chain, ICHCA brings together a wide range of players that perform a vital role in driving the world economy. The added knowledge and experience that the number one container shipping line brings will be a tremendous asset in carrying out ICHCA’s primary mission of maintaining and improving safety in all aspects of cargo handling. 2. ICHCA Joins Container Cleanliness Advisory Group

IPPC Industry Advisory Group and Conference
World food security and biodiversity is at risk from contaminating pests. Plant pests and diseases are responsible for the loss of up to 40% of global food crops and trade losses exceeding $22bn annually.

The lead UN body, the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures has created a phytosanitary expert Focus Group to look at potential pest contamination on sea containers. Recognising the need for industry input, the Commission has also created an Industry Advisory Group. Our application to join this group as a safety champion was accepted earlier this month.

3. Global Lifting Awareness Day - 7 July 2022

GLAD 2 of 2

We were delighted to celebrate GLAD 2022

The battle with gravity is essential to our way of life. Fighting gravity carries inherent risks to be managed. Getting it wrong can lead to accident, injury and even fatality. As we work higher, heavier and more complex, our ability to lift safely becomes ever more important. GLAD is a day when stakeholders can unite to share material promoting safe and high quality load lifting.
GLAD is all about ensuring that end users can make well-informed purchasing decisions by fully understanding applicable regulations and good practice standards.

4. Current Awareness Bulletin - for IMO Themes and News

code amendment 40-20

ICHCA is grateful for the hard work and input from members of the Dangerous Goods Working Group, chaired by Les Richings, and particularly Will Bartle from ICHCA member Exis Technologies for updating The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code booklet (BP3) in line with Amendment 40-20.

IMDG Code Amendment 40-20 became mandatory on 1 June 2022 after a delay due to the Covid pandemic. It will remain in force until 31 December 2023. Amendment 41-22 can be used voluntarily from 1 January 2023. Click the button below to see the full IMDG Code Amendment Cycle.
