January 2026

Dear Members and Friends...

As we step into 2026, this edition of ICHCA Insights reflects both the momentum we have built together and the ambition that continues to drive our work. The start of a new year is always an opportunity to take stock - not only of what we have achieved, but of the challenges ahead and the role we can collectively play in addressing them.

Safety in cargo handling remains a dynamic, evolving space. New technologies, increasing regulatory complexity and the need to continually improve industry performance on a hard core of critical safety issues such as crush, strike, fall and confined space mean that the need for trusted guidance, shared learning and global collaboration has never been greater. ICHCA exists to meet that need, and 2025 demonstrated just how powerful our community can be when expertise is shared openly and purpose is clear.

In this issue, you will hear from our new Chair, whose message reinforces the strength of ICHCA’s foundations and the importance of our collaborative culture. Our January Report to Members highlights a year of tangible progress — from practical tools and enhanced data insight to meaningful engagement with international regulators — and sets out an ambitious programme for 2026 that will see major initiatives move from concept to delivery.

We also look ahead to opportunities to connect, learn and celebrate. The upcoming TT Club Innovation in Safety Award event is a chance to recognise ingenuity across our industry and to exchange ideas with peers who are driving real-world improvements. Alongside this, we continue to expand access to learning through resources such as our IMDG Code e-learning course, supporting competence and confidence at every level.

Finally, our ongoing work at the IMO underlines the importance of ensuring the cargo handling sector’s voice is heard where global standards are shaped. Through engagement, observation and informed contribution, ICHCA members help influence safer outcomes for the entire industry.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement. Together, we will ensure that 2026 is a year of progress, impact and shared commitment to protecting people and operations worldwide

Let’s keep raising standards, together.

5. The work of the IMO and the latest Current Awareness Bulletin

ICHCA is proud to be a recognised Non-Governmental Organisation at the International Maritime Organisation. It means that the cargo handling industry has a voice when amendments to international regulations and codes of practice are being made.

The next meeting for maritime safety concerns is the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) which starts on 19 January 2026. ICHCA members can attend in person or virtually, to observe the processes and contribute to our work at IMO on industry’s behalf. For more information, contact secretariat@ichca.com.

If you want to know what has been happening recently at IMO, one of the helpful options is the Current Awareness Bulletin. The November 2025 issue is now available on our web site along with back issues.
